Alan is the incoming Chair of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP) for the next two years. As well, Alan serves on the Insolvency Practice Advisory Committee to the OSB.
Alan has also held the following positions in the past:
- Co-chair of the CAIRP/IIC committee responsible for responding to the Personal Insolvency Task Force’s Study and Recommendations for the next set of Amendments to The Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

Alan is currently Director of Camp Wishbone Foundation, an organization which assists in the Greater Toronto Community, challenged youths who are without family support.

STEWART SOMERS, BA, CA
Senior Vice President
Stewart Somers brings thirty years of corporate financial and turnaround expertise. A consultant since 1976, Stewart has assisted clients and their lenders in various turnaround, monitoring and insolvency engagements. He also provides clients with advisory services to assist them in planning and implementing growth strategies for their business operations. Stewart obtained his CA designation from Coopers and Lybrand (Toronto) in 1969, after receiving a BA (Economics) at the University of Toronto.

JOE ALBERT, BBA, CA, CIRP, Trustee
Vice President
Joe Albert joined the firm in 1990 and since then has been working exclusively in the firm’s corporate insolvency practice. Joe obtained much of his insolvency training while working as a Senior Manager in the Insolvency practice of Thorne Ernst & Whinney (now KPMG). Joe has strong insolvency experience across a broad section of the Canadian economy.

Deborah, a chartered accountant since 1989, has been a member of the Canadian Insolvency and Restructuring Practitioner’s association since 1990. Prior to joining
SPERGEL in 1997, she worked in the corporate recovery department of Price Waterhouse Coopers for five years. Deborah has experience in administrating commercial insolvencies under a variety of legislative vehicles, and her experience covers a wide spectrum of industries.Email: deborah@spergel.ca

Gerry joined SPERGEL in 1991 and works in the firm’s corporate insolvency practice, where he has been managing restructuring assignments for many types of entrepreneurial businesses in crisis. Prior to joining our firm, Gerry held senior executive positions within the Imasco group of companies and, laterally, owned and operated his own national distribution business.

BRYAN GELMAN, BA
Senior Manager
Bryan Gelman has been an Articling Member of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals since 2001 and is in his final year to obtain his license as a Trustee in Bankruptcy. He assists on all commercial insolvency engagements and supervises field personnel.
Bryan is also an active volunteer for JVS Toronto. He serves on the Finance and Administration Committee and is a nominee for the 2008 Board of Directors.
